IQALUIT, NU. Jean has four children, ranging in age from 9 to 23—and for all of their lives, she has made their parkas herself. “Designing and sewing is very important to me,” explains Jean, who says it’s her kids who’ve chosen her designs, year after year. “They say I make their parkas warm and comfortable.” She learned how to sew from her grandmother, who taught her after a 13-year-old Jean was “too picky” about the colours being chosen for her own homemade parkas. All these years later, it’s something she’s come to love doing: “It’s a great stress reliever.”
